Introspection is always a challenging prospect.

How many of us truly look into ourselves and assess what our core capabilities are? Do we even know what types of skills are required in any given project or even in a business?

I thought I would take the plunge and make an assessment of myself using an acknowledged industry standard measure. Step in Gallup and the Strengthsfinder 2.0.

Most people, myself included at one point, are prone to deep seated (and mostly irrational) fears about standing front and center and shouldering responsibility or delivering a speech to an audience. It is fair to say that over the years I have done this enough times to now see past the irrational fears and just suffer the good old “butterflies in the tummy” before getting on stage!

I’ve done many sorts of assessments through the years but this one piqued my interest when I heard Michael Hyatt speak about it recently. So, I went and took the test. It’s not free – if you want to see all 34 strengths in order you’ll pay around $90USD. You can get your Top 5 for $9.99 USD though so it might be worth taking the plunge for that. Especially if you are intent on building a team of people and you want to ensure you’ve got a good mix of skills.

For your hard-earned money you will get to see your strengths in order, get a short video on each and a PDF describing what each means in a little more detail.

In the spirit of openness and integrity, I will share with you my Top 10; and given the path I have chosen for myself I am delighted to say the skill set matches what my coaching clients feed back to me all the time!

Here we go:

1. Futuristic People who are especially talented in the Futuristic theme are inspired by the future and what could be. They inspire others with their visions of the future.

2. Activator People who are especially talented in the Activator theme can make things happen by turning thoughts into action. They are often impatient.

3. Individualization People who are especially talented in the Individualization theme are intrigued with the unique qualities of each person. They have a gift for figuring out how people who are different can work together productively.

4. Strategic People who are especially talented in the Strategic theme create alternative ways to proceed. Faced with any given scenario, they can quickly spot the relevant patterns and issues.

5. Command People who are especially talented in the Command theme have presence. They can take control of a situation and make decisions.

6. Self-Assurance People who are especially talented in the Self-Assurance theme feel confident in their ability to manage their own lives. They possess an inner compass that gives them confidence that their decisions are right.

7. Significance People who are especially talented in the Significance theme want to be very important in the eyes of others. They are independent and want to be recognized.

8. Relator People who are especially talented in the Relator theme enjoy close relationships with others. They find deep satisfaction in working hard with friends to achieve a goal.

9. Learner People who are especially talented in the Learner theme have a great desire to learn and want to continuously improve. In particular, the process of learning, rather than the outcome, excites them.

10. Arranger People who are especially talented in the Arranger theme can organize, but they also have a flexibility that complements this ability. They like to figure out how all of the pieces and resources can be arranged for maximum productivity.

I’m pleased with the outcome. I think these strengths fairly represent how I see myself and how I think I deliver.
